Celebrate Local Video Games At The Singapore Games Week From 11 – 17 October
In recent years, the local video game industry in Singapore has seen a significant boost in visibility among aspiring game developers and gamers alike. Thanks to the Singapore Games Association (SGGA), you’ll be entreated to even more local gaming goodness at the Singapore Games Week (SGW) this October.
Organised by the Singapore Games Association (SGGA), SGW 2021 is a festival that showcases local game developers in Singapore and the fruits of their creative labours to both the local and international gaming community. Held in conjunction with gamescom asia, it will run from 11 – 17 October 2021, and will feature a series of both virtual and physical events with plenty of opportunities for gaming enthusiasts to witness what local game devs have been up to, and inspire would-be developers to kickstart their own careers.
SGW 2021 commences on 11 October with the opening of the SGW Virtual Village — an online exhibition hub which houses various activities for visitors to partake in and get a glimpse into the creative process of game design. These include game design workshops such as “The Paper Playground” by AlterCulture Studios, community activities by Gank (both available only from 11 – 17 October), and a Treasure Hunt to win prizes and daily online screenings of gaming-themed documentaries and films. Entry to the SGW Virtual Village is free of charge, and will remain open to the public until 31 October.
From 14 – 17 October, SGW 2021 will coincide with gamescom asia, the first Asian satellite event of Gamescom, the world’s largest and most prominent video games festival. At the event, SGGA will be organising a hybrid Singapore Pavilion, which will play host to all local Singaporean gaming and esports startups, as well as SMEs such as game development studios, esports production companies, and platforms to network with one another.
Last but not least, SGW 2021 will culminate in the Asia Games Awards on 17 October. Organised by SGGA in partnership with gamescom asia, this online-only event celebrates gaming and esports in all of Asia, and will serve as a perfect way to close out the festival by presenting awards to the best of video games and esports in the continent.
“We conceptualised SGW as a celebration of the business aspect of the Singapore games industry, as well as give its awesome communities a platform to reach out to the masses. This year’s event will be held online. We hope SGW can grow into an annual experiential opportunity for both industry players and the general public to better understand our local games industry – so come attend, participate, or even organise a fringe event with us! At the same time, we hope to also showcase Singapore’s games expertise to the international games industry,” said Gwen Guo, SGGA’s chairperson, in a press release.
