After nearly 2 years of radio silence, we finally have a proper update on the progress of the upcoming Netflix anime adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. 

Recently, Netflix announced its Netflix Geeked Week digital event from 6-10 June, where it will be revealing its latest and greatest shows coming to the streaming service. The producers, directors, and cast members of these shows will be coming to talk about their upcoming releases, and perhaps reveal new trailers or footage for what’s to come. Here’s the trailer for the event:

Among the shows coming to Netflix Geeked Week are the likes of Stranger Things Season 4, The Umbrella Academy Season 3, the highly-anticipated Sandman live-action adaptation, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, among many other titles. The Edgerunners panel specifically will take place on 8 June.

Animated by Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, SSSS.Gridman) in collaboration with CD Project Red, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was first announced in early 2020, following the release of Cyberpunk 2077. Edgerunners is a spinoff series that follows an alternate story set in the sprawling dystopian future of Night City. The Netflix Geeked trailer above revealed snippets of new footage from the show, and we’re certain to expect more to come during the event.

Here is the official synopsis for the series: 

“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner-a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”

Never mind that the main game has enjoyed lots of fanfare and its fair share of controversy since its release, what makes Edgerunners one to look out for are two main factors: it is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi of Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann fame, and its composer is Akira Yamaoka, known for his works on the iconic Silent Hill games by Konami. And of course, Studio Trigger is known for its scintillating animations and action sequences, so you can expect tons of high-octane scenes from this 10-episode miniseries.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has been slated for a 2022 release, so expect that a release date will most likely be revealed at Netflix Geeked Week.
