Game News! 30/10/18

Games! Games! Games! We have been super busy here! With what you may ask? Err…Red Dead Redemption 2. Anyway, Paris Games Week wraps up today and there are still a few announcements going on. Let’s take a look.

Twin Mirror

After the stunning first season of Life is Strange, Dontnod has struggled to capture that magic again with the lacklustre Vampyre and the disappointing (so far!) Life is Strange 2. But there is hope! As we know from earlier in the year, they have teamed up with Bandai Namco to release a new episodic game called Twin Mirror. The first gameplay video is out! Colour us impressed! We like the look of this. The first episode, Lost on Arrival will drop sometime in early 2019.

Toki

Toki is back! The arcade classic is heading to the Nintendo Switch on November 22nd! Initially released in 1989 in the arcades, the cult 2D action platformer seduced a whole generation of players with its challenging difficulty. The remake of this arcade classic has been completely redrawn and re-orchestrated by Philippe Dessoly and Pierre Adane, the architects behind the original Amiga conversion of the game back in the 1990’s. Super retro!

No Man’s Sky: The Abyss

After the woeful launch a couple of years ago, No Man’s Sky is now a fantastic game thanks to the constant free updates. This is definitely the game it should have been at launch. What does the latest free update give you? Quite a bit!

Aquatic Missions and Narrative: A new story, The Dreams of the Deep, brings a new context to the depths and a dark narrative to No Man’s Sky. Players are invited to discover the fate of a troubled crew stranded from a freighter crash by the rising tides or explore underwater ruins to uncover the tale of a lost soul trapped deep beneath the waves.

Submarine Vehicle: Master the depths of planets using a new Exocraft, the Nautilon. This submersible vehicle gives new meaning to underwater navigation, combat and mining – and can be summoned to any ocean on the planet, as well as docked at underwater buildings. Players can upgrade the submersible with installable Submarine Technology and customise the Nautilon to stand out from their fellow explorers.

Submersible Building Modules: More than a dozen new base parts have been added to unlock more creative possibilities underwater. Players can construct the new Marine Shelter for a brief respite from the oceanic pressure, and use its protection to reach new depths. New glass corridors, viewing bays and multi-storey submersible view domes provide travellers with the perfect view of the surrounding ocean. Players can now bring their aquatic life into a habitat with a decorative indoor aquarium.

Flora and Fauna: The variety and visual quality of underwater biomes have been greatly improved. Players can now experience rare exotic aquatic biomes as they explore new depths. Underwater creatures have become more frequent, and more interesting. Aquatic life inhabits the full depth of the ocean, and unique terrifying creatures can be encountered on the ocean floor.

Sunken Wrecks and Ancient Treasures: Investigate sunken ruins and find ancient treasures or dive to submerged buildings to find remnants of their lost occupants. Discover and scavenge lost cargo from gigantic freighter wrecks. Use the terrain manipulator to excavate treasures buried in the nearby ocean floor. Find and repair rare crashed starships to restore them from the seabed to the skies.

Maid of Sker

Survival horror time!

Maid of Sker is a first-person stealth survival horror, set in a remote hotel with a macabre history. Based on the haunting true story of Elizabeth Williams, you will play as Thomas Evans, a musician who is thrust into a terrifying battle to save the woman he loves. Set in 1898 in and around Sker House, a real dwelling which still stands to this day and is said to be one the most haunted in Britain.

Featuring realistic 4K visuals with gameplay focused on stealth, exploration and no-weapon survival tactics. Think Outlast style gameplay. Players will experience multiple threads of narrative where your decisions matter, unlocking different story paths and multiple endings. Hide, run, creep, trap and distract are just some of the basic techniques you need to master to survive the horrific location. As you progress, enemies become more difficult to avoid, to the point where standing still and holding your breath is the only option! Time it correctly and you’re safe, for now. Run out of breath and — suffer. We like this very much. The only downside? It’s not coming until Q3 2019.

Not a bad little update this week. Some good stuff in there. Time for us to jump back in the saddle and head back to Red Dead Redemption 2. See you next week.
