PlayStation’s Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War & Gran Turismo To Get TV Adaptations

Video game and TV adaptations are certainly experiencing a boom these days. Recently, Sony Pictures Entertainment has confirmed that it has not one, not two, but ten new projects in development by PlayStation Productions.
Twitter user @BenjiSales revealed in a tweet that Sony has announced three new PlayStation Productions live-action adaptations that are in the works. A Horizon Zero Dawn series is slated for release on Netflix, while a series based on God of War will be set to be released on Amazon Prime Video. A Gran Turismo series has also been confirmed, but no streaming service has been announced to have picked the racing-game-based project up.

Besides the fresh new reveals, other projects by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are still in the oven. In 2019, a TV show based on the vehicular-combat classic Twisted Metal was announced to drop on Peacock. It will be a “half-hour live-action TV series” and a “high-octane action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland)”.
Names attached to this project include Will Arnett as producer, Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai) as showrunner, and Anthony Mackie in the starring role. No release date has been announced for this series yet.
Meanwhile, the Ghost of Tsushima movie seems to be making progress. The film was announced in March of 2021, and it was revealed that it will be directed by Chad Stahelski, who is best known for his work on the John Wick tetralogy. Since then, Takashi Doscher has been picked to be the samurai action-adventure flick’s screenwriter.
There’s also a Metal Gear Solid movie that was first announced in 2020, though there’s been near radio silence on it ever since. What we do know is that Oscar Isaac, known for his roles in the Star Wars sequels, Dune, and Moon Knight, will be starring as the iconic Solid Snake. Earlier this year, an update from IGN reassured fans that the movie seems to be alive. Oscar Isaac said about the movie that “we’re searching (…) we’re looking for the story.”
Lastly, and most concretely, we have the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us. The series will star Pedro Pascal from The Mandalorian and Bella Ramsey from Game of Thrones as the protagonists Joel and Ellie respectively. It will be written and produced by Neil Druckmann, the creative director and writer of the video game, as well as Craig Mazin, best known for creating the HBO miniseries Chernobyl. Reportedly, there will be several seasons in store for this post-apocalyptic series. Unfortunately, there is still no trailer or release date available, but it has been speculated that it will be released in 2023.
That’s all we know about the upcoming projects so far. With only seven out of ten IPs confirmed, who knows what else is up Sony’s sleeve?
