Singapore Games Association (“SGGA”) Officially Launched to Provide Support for Gaming and Esports in Singapore

3 August 2020 saw the official launch of the Singapore Games Association (“SGGA”), Singapore’s primary trade association for the gaming and esports industry. Supported by government agencies Enterprise Singapore (ESG), Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), SGGA aims to develop and support a sustainable gaming and esports ecosystem locally while making a name for Singapore on the global stage.

SGGA is an evolution of the former Singapore Games Guild (SGG), a non-profit organisation founded in 2017 as a sister organisation of the International Games Development Association Singapore (IGDA|SG), which focused primarily on grassroots initiatives for game development in Singapore. The new association will focus on an expanded role of an enabler to support the full spectrum of the gaming industry, with additional focus on esports.

The key initiatives of SGGA include building networking opportunities between gaming and esports companies, associations, and businesses on both a local and international level, cultivating a sustainable and inclusive ecosystem for gaming and esports, and uplifting the industry expertise through various capability development initiatives.

One such initiative is the Singapore Esports Initiative which aims to increase accessibility to esports by supporting events and networking conferences, raising industry standards through training and accreditation, and showcasing and celebrating the achievements of the local esports community of businesses and talents. This initiative also seeks to position Singapore esports enterprises as credible partners for international companies and organisations looking to host events in Asia.

SGGA will also be launching its paid membership program which provides special rates and access to SGGA initiatives including local and global event participation, networking opportunities, resources, and training courses through SGGA’s extensive network. This membership program will be open to all Singapore-registered companies and Singapore-based individuals including freelancers.

The association announced its inaugural SGGA Industry Day, a digital conference held on 7 and 8 August that will allow participants to gain insights from and network with experts topics ranging from understanding AAA games to becoming aware of the skill sets required to land a job in the esports industry. The association will be chaired by industry veteran Gwen Guo, co-founder and Creative Director of Imba Interactive, a Singapore-based game audio services studio, who will be working alongside vice-chairperson Elicia Lee, the Managing Director of Eliphant, which specialises in game marketing, events, live stream products and esports in Asia. They will be supported by an Executive committee and Advisory Board of industry professionals.
