The first year of Not-E3 is off to a flying start, thanks to the efforts of the gaming industry at large. Following last week’s high-octane PlayStation State of Play presentation, we were treated to a host of world premieres and updates to upcoming games in the Summer Game Fest hosted by The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley.

Just like the State of Play show, there was a good mix of AAA and indie games, as well as established and brand-new IPs, showcased at Summer Game Fest. Interestingly, sci-fi and horror are the two most common genres seen at this staggering showcase of over thirty (30) titles. And though we might have seen some of these games at previous shows, a lot of new gameplay footage was shown as well to further whet our appetites.

Without further ado, here are the games that were showcased at Summer Game Fest!

Street Fighter 6

Kicking off the show was a gameplay reveal of a fan favourite fighter – Guile. Veterans of the franchise will be familiar with this big bruiser’s deceptively quick moveset with lots of ranged options to keep opponents at bay, and will be raring to play him when the game releases in 2023.

Aliens: Dark Descent

Alien fans can look forward to a new single-player isometric tactical action title in the franchise in Aliens: Dark Descent by Focus Entertainment and Tindalos Interactive. In this game, you play as a squad of Marines with the ability to level up and outfit them with new gear as you shoot your way through a literal planet infested by the iconic Xenomorphs. Coming out in 2023 for PC and consoles.

The Callisto Protocol

First revealed at last week’s State of Play, the veteran team at Striking Distance Studios showcased some early gameplay footage of The Callisto Protocol. From this trailer, it’s clear that the ex-Dead Space devs are hard at work making a game they would certainly be proud of. And the best part is that it’s releasing on 2 December 2022 for PC and consoles!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 

A classic sequel to a modern classic is back with a gloss-up in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Activision and Infinity Ward showed us a taste of the new campaign featuring some fan-favourite characters from the franchise, including Captain Price, Soap and the iconic skull-balaclava-wearing Ghost. Coming 28 October for consoles and PC.

Flashback 2

Perhaps no one saw this coming, but a sequel to the 1992 science fiction platformer Flashback is coming in Winter 2022 to PC and modern consoles! If you’ve played the original game 30 years ago, this (heh) flashback will definitely be worth checking out when it drops.

Witchfire

When Doom Eternal meets Warhammer: Vermintide, you have the dark fantasy roguelike FPS Witchfire by The Astronauts. If you enjoyed previously-mentioned games, this might well be up your alley. While no release date was announced yet, early access for this game is coming soon, exclusively to the Epic Games Store.

Fort Solis

Fort Solis is a sci-fi thriller title to come out of this show, this time by indie developer Fallen Leaf. Don’t be fooled by its indie tag though – the voice acting lineup in this game is AAA for sure, with the likes of Troy Baker (The Last of Us), Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2), and Julia Brown (The Alienist). Coming soon to Steam.

Routine

First announced back in 2012, survival horror game Routine will has been (re)revealed to release for PC and consoles very soon. This game puts you in the setting of an abandoned lunar base, where you have to roam around the complex to hack various systems while avoiding the clutches of rogue robots.

Outriders Worldslayer DLC

Despite a relatively tame release, Outriders surprisingly continues to received support from its devs and community. The first major content update, Worldslayer is due for release on 30 June 2022.

Fall Guys Free For All

We already knew that the free-to-play mode for Fall Guys is coming on 21 June, but the developers released a quirky new live-action trailer to celebrate the release of the update, featuring some big-name American streamers including Valkyrae, Sykkuno, and CourageJD.

Stormgate

From the minds of the iconic StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3 comes Stormgate, a brand-new entry to hopefully inject some fresh ideas into the now-stale RTS genre. What sets this game apart already is that it is free-to-play, with multiple game modes to make Stormgate accessible to just about anyone, including 1v1, co-op and up to 3v3 competitive multiplayer. No release date has been announced yet, but a beta version of the game is coming to PC in 2023.

Highwater

Highwater is an indie title that talks about climate change, a topic that is very relevant in today’s current climate situation. The game puts you in a scenario where the world has been almost fully submerged in water, and you have to explore what remains of the land in search of other survivors. Coming sometime in 2022.

American Arcadia

American Arcadia is what one would imagine The Truman Show as a video game, and what indie developer Out of the Blue has done in this trailer has certainly piqued my interest. It’s coming soon to PC and consoles, but you may wishlist it on Steam.

Goat Simulator 3

In the opening seconds of this trailer, everyone thought it was going to be a long-awaited update to the now-dead Dead Island 2, but instead we were had in the first half with a trailer for a sequel to 2014’s Goat Simulator. And as if the trolling wasn’t over, developer Coffee Stain North actually skipped a number ahead, making it Goat Simulator 3. Coming Fall 2022 to PC and consoles.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

The Marvel tactical strategy game by 2K and Firaxis is edging closer to its 7 October release. This new trailer showed us glimpses of Spider-Man joining the ranks of playable Marvel heroes, as well as his archnemesis Venom being corrupted by Lilith, along with other corrupted characters including The Hulk.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course DLC

After its announcement late last year, we finally have some gameplay footage of Cuphead’s very first DLC, The Delicious Last Course, featuring the new playable character, Ms. Chalice, as well as a chilly new boss. The DLC launches on 30 June for PC and consoles.

Neon White

Some scintillating new gameplay footage for the upcoming indie deck-builder/FPS hybrid Neon White was shown at the Summer Game Fest. The best part about this trailer is that release is just under a week away at the time of writing: 16 June for Steam and Nintendo Switch.

Midnight Fight Express

If you like the beating up bad buys across a cyberpunk backdrop along to a stellar synthwave soundtrack, the isometric action title Midnigth Fight Express might just be the game for you. Coming on 23 August for PC and consoles, you can try the PC demo live right now on Steam.

Warframe: The Duviri Paradox

Warframe stalwarts, your voices have been heard. The long-awaited expansion, The Duviri Paradox was announced at Summer Game Fest, and it’s shaping up to be a very big deal. More gameplay footage will be revealed at TennoCon on 16 July, so stay tuned then for updates on the expansion.

Honkai: Star Rail

Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse has come out with not one, but two brand-new science fiction titles to showcase at Summer Game Fest. The first of these is Honkai: Star Rail, a spacefaring adventure featuring turn-based squad combat set in a new futuristic galaxy. No release date for the game was announced yet, but the developers are wrapping up its second closed beta test on 15 June.

Zenless Zone Zero

While Honkai: Star Rail takes gamers to the endless expanse of outer space, Zenless Zone Zero seems to be a more on-the-ground cyberpunk experience. Like Genshin Impact, the game will feature high-octane action combat and flashy visuals, except cranked to the max. Certainly one to look out for when it eventually releases.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

From IPs of the future to an all-time classic, we have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. This pixel-style beat-em-up lets you play with up to six players in both local and online co-op! Yup, that includes Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, April O’Neil, and Casey Jones, all sharing the screen and beating up Shredder and his band of baddies. Coming out on 16 June 2022 for PC and consoles.

Humankind

Amplitude’s 2021 historical 4X strategy hit Humankind has been announced to launch on consoles on 4 November. Definitely worth a go if you’re into the likes of Civilization, Age of Wonders and Stellaris.

One Piece Odyssey

A beautiful new cinematic trailer for One Piece Odyssey, the upcoming JRPG in the iconic One Piece franchise, was dropped, showcasing the Straw Hat Crew in all their 3D animated glory. No gameplay footage was revealed, though the game is coming sometime in 2022 for PC and consoles.

Soul Hackers 2

The upcoming cyberpunk JRPG Soul Hackers 2 by Atlus is coming to PC and consoles on 26 August 2022. A futuristic take on the iconic Persona series, featuring a turn-based combat system, and a social/exploratory system when out of combat, this will certainly scratch your Persona itch and then some.

Metal: Hellsinger

If there’s anything the recent Doom games and composer Mick Gordon have taught us, it’s that metal music and bloody, riveting first-person shooting most certainly go hand-in-hand. The developers for Metal: Hellsinger certainly had that in mind, and took that a step further by incorporating a rhythm element in the same vein as 2020’s BPM: Bullets Per Minute, while injecting the original soundtrack with an ensemble guest roster of iconic frontmen and frontwomen in modern metal, including System of a Down’s Serj Tankan, Trivium’s Matt Heafy, and Jinjer’s Tatiana Shmailyuk. Coming out on PC and consoles on 15 September, with a PC demo available now on Steam.

The Quarry

2K’s cinematic horror title The Quarry releases this week, but the publisher somehow wanted to remind us of that at Summer Game Fest with a new cinematic release trailer. If you’re a fan of horror adventure titles such as The Dark Pictures Anthology, this game might just be up your alley.

Nightingale

Deck-building has been a rising trend of sub-genre lately, and has been incorporated to bizarrely interesting effect in many recent and upcoming games. This is no different in Nightingale, a first-person survival game where you determine how the world and its inhabitants change using the influence of powerful cards. No release date was announced, but you can wishlist it on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Saints Row Boss Factory

A reboot of the 2006 Saints Row is coming later this year, and at Summer Game Fest we were shown Boss Factory, a free app that lets you create and customise your character before hopping on the game. The Boss Factory app is available to download now, while the Saints Row reboot is scheduled for an August 2022 release for PC and consoles.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Warhammer fans have been blessed by the two first-person hack-and-slash Vermintide games that came out in recent years. This time, the same developers of Vermintide and its sequel bring to you Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, a spiritual successor set in the futuristic 40K universe. If there’s anything to go by, we can expect more of the same blood-pumping, fast-paced first-person action seen in the previous two games in this one. The game comes out on 13 September 2022 for PC and Xbox Series X|S.

Layers of Fears

Bloober Team is back with a new entry in the Layers of Fear psychological horror franchise. Layers of Fears is “built upon the foundations” of the previous games in the series, and aims to up the ante in this title, coming out in early 2023 for PC and consoles.

Gotham Knights

While we’ve seen tons of new gameplay footage for WB Montreal’s Gotham Knights, one more featuring the original Bat-prodigy Dick Grayson a.k.a Nightwing wouldn’t hurt at all, I think. If you’re an avid Nightwing fan, this cinematic trailer may just confirm your decision to play through the game as him when it releases on 25 October for PC and consoles.

The Last of Us Part 1 Remake

Capping off this massive Summer Game Fest is the reveal of a next-gen remake of 2013’s The Last of Us Part 1, coming to PS5 on 2 September 2022. It was announced that the remake would also be released on PC at a later date. 

Not only that, game director Neil Druckmann revealed that a new standalone multiplayer game set in The Last of Us universe is in development, and that Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, the voice actors for Ellie and Joel respectively, will be featuring to some degree in the upcoming HBO live-action TV adaptation of the game on HBO, featuring Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal as their live-action counterparts.

None too shabby for Summer Game Fest. With such a massive showing of games, and only being the first of a series of upcoming presentations, I think it’s safe to say that gamers are safe without E3 around.
